Franz Emerich

Franz Emerich (* 1496 in Troppau , Silesia ; † May 25, 1560 in Vienna ) was an Austrian doctor and university professor.

Live and act

Franz Emerich, originally from Silesia, was the first professor of surgery at the University of Vienna . After he had already given lectures on the subject from 1536, a separate chair for surgery was established at the university in 1542. In 1548 Emerich became dean . He made great contributions to the medical science of his time.

Franz Emerich was buried in the former cemetery near St. Stephen's Cathedral. In 1907 the Franz-Emerich-Gasse in Vienna- Meidling was named after the doctor.
