Ferești (Hungarian Fejérfalva ) is a village in Maramureș County ( Romania ). It belongs to the Giuleşti municipality .

location

Fereşti is located about 12 km southeast of the city of Sighetu Marmației at the confluence of the Cosău River into the Mara .

history

The place was first mentioned in a document in 1402. For several centuries it was part of the Maramures County and thus the Kingdom of Hungary . After the First World War he came to Romania.

population

Since the official censuses began in 1850, the village has been predominantly inhabited by Romanians . Until the Second World War , Jews made up the largest minority (about 5–10 percent). The residents of Fereşti are now exclusively Romanians.

traffic

Ferești is on the national road 18 that leads from Baia Mare to Iacobeni . From this a street branches off, which runs through the elongated place. There are bus connections to Sighetu Marmației on the national road. The nearest train station is about 13 km northwest of the village on the Sighetu Marmației – Ivano-Frankivsk railway line . A narrow-gauge railway running through Ferești since the end of the 19th century was shut down around 1970.

Fereşti wooden church

Ferești has a very attractive landscape. The place is characterized by many well-preserved traditional houses with wooden gates. The main tourist attraction is the well-preserved wooden church built around 1700 .
