Theodor Kroyer

Theodor Kroyer (born September 9, 1873 in Munich , † January 12, 1945 in Wiesbaden ) was a German musicologist.

Life

After graduating from the Wilhelmsgymnasium in Munich in 1893 , Theodor Kroyer studied at the University of Munich and at the Academy for Music in Munich. He received his doctorate in 1897 and completed his habilitation in 1902 at the University of Munich, where he taught as an adjunct professor from 1907.

From 1920 to 1923 he was professor of musicology at the University of Heidelberg , where he devoted himself particularly to researching early music. He then worked as full professor for music at the University of Leipzig and was instrumental in setting up the musical instrument museum. In 1932 he became professor of musicology at the University of Cologne , where he worked until his retirement in 1938. He founded the musicological series Cologne Contributions to Music Research , which continued until 2002, and was the editor of the first three volumes. In the series Monuments of the Tonkunst in Bayern he edited the volume on Ludwig Senfl , the edition of the study score of Mozart's Haffner Symphony that he had obtained is in use to the present day. He wrote biographies of Josef Rheinberger and Walter Courvoisier . His students included Karl Laux , Eugen Schmitz , Hans von Benda , Heinrich Strobel and Wolfgang Fortner .
