In 1937 he was appointed general music director by Hitler.

From 1948 to 1952, Benda worked in Franco-Spain as general music director of the Orquesta Sinfonica de Valencia and as conductor of other Spanish orchestras. In 1952 he re- founded the Berlin Chamber Orchestra . It was put together from musicians from the RIAS Symphony Orchestra , and until 1967, Benda undertook extensive trips to 5 continents, 56 countries and 367 cities on behalf of the Foreign Office. From 1954 to 1958 he was also head of the music department at the Sender Freies Berlin . In 1958, Benda was awarded the Great Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
