Adolf Wilhelm August Sandberger (born December 19, 1864 in Würzburg , † January 14, 1943 in Munich ) was a German musicologist and composer as well as a privy councilor.

Life

The son of geologist Fridolin Sandberger was a composition student of Max Meyer-Olbersleben in Würzburg and then studied composition in Munich with Josef Rheinberger . He then took courses in musicology with Philipp Spitta at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Berlin and received his doctorate in 1887 with a thesis on Peter Cornelius . During his studies he became a member of the AGV Munich .

From 1889 he was a curator at the Bavarian State Library in Munich, in 1894 he completed his habilitation and initially taught as a private lecturer, then from 1900 as a professor of music history at the Ludwig Maximilians University . He was the founder of the Society for the Publication of Monuments of Tonkunst in Bayern , which published the thirty-eight-volume series Monuments of Tonkunst in Bayern and headed the society until 1932. He also published Orlando di Lasso's works between 1894 and 1927 and the new from 1924 to 1942 Beethoven yearbook .

Sandberger was the teacher of Werner Egk , Felix Raabe , Hans von Benda , Eugen Schmitz and Heinrich Strobel . In addition to orchestral works and operas , he composed chamber music , piano pieces and songs .

His successor in Munich was Rudolf von Ficker .
