Quincas Laranjeiras (born December 8, 1873 in Olinda , Pernambuco state , † February 3, 1935 in Rio de Janeiro ; actually Joaquim Francisco dos Santos ) was a Brazilian guitarist and composer .

biography

Quincas Laranjeiras was born the son of a carpenter in Pernambuco, but the family soon moved to Rio de Janeiro, where he lived all his life. He first learned to play the flute in order to devote himself to the guitar at the age of eleven, inspired by his brother . At this time he started taking lessons from João Elias . He soon developed into an excellent companion for Modinhas .

At sixteen he became a civil servant. He regularly attended concerts and dance events, where he met other musicians such as Heitor Villa-Lobos , Catulo da Paixão Cearense , Anacleto de Medeiros , Irineu de Almeida , Juca Kallut , José Cavaquinho and João Pernambuco .

He deepened his studies on the guitar and transformed from an accompanist to a great soloist. He played choruses , polkas , waltzes as well as classical compositions. In addition, he became a sought-after guitar teacher. He taught based on the methodology of Dionisio Aguado and Francisco Tárrega . He also expanded the guitar repertoire by writing many transcriptions and arrangements .
