Irineu de Almeida

Irineu Gomes de Almeida (* 1873 in Rio de Janeiro , † 1916 ibid), also called Irineu Batina , was a Brazilian musician and composer. He played the ophicleide , trombone and euphonium and is one of the most important choro musicians at the turn of the century.

Life

Irineu de Almeida has been a member of the Banda do Corpo de Bombeiros since it was founded in 1896, under the direction of Anacleto de Medeiros . In the following years he met well-known musicians such as Quincas Laranjeiras , Heitor Villa-Lobos , João Pernambuco and Satyro Bilhar .

In 1906 he had his first success with the composition Os olhos d'Ella , a Xote that was recorded with the group Banda da Casa Edson for the record company Odeon . In 1911 he became the teacher of Pixinguinha , with whose father he was friends. Since 1913 he was a member of the group Choro Carioca , took part in other recordings, including with Pixinguinha, and wrote other successful pieces. He gained particular importance through his ability to play contrapuntal lines in choro music.

A total of over 30 printed compositions by Irineu de Almeida have survived.
