José Cavaquinho

José Cavaquinho (born March 20, 1884 in Guaratinguetá in the Brazilian state of São Paulo ; † May 1, 1951 in Rio de Janeiro ), actually José Rabelo da Silva , was a Brazilian cavaquinho player , guitarist , flutist , conductor and composer who also worked under the Name Zé Cavaquinho is known.

Life

José Cavaquinho moved to Rio de Janeiro at an early age, where he learned to play the cavaquinho. He later started playing the flute and guitar. His musical career began at the age of 19. At that time he played as a flautist in various musical groups that accompanied screenings in cinemas. He became a member of the ensemble Cavaquinho de Ouro , in which many other well-known musicians played such as Quincas Laranjeiras , Anacleto de Medeiros , Luís de Souza , Juca Kalut , Catulo da Paixão Cearense , Irineu de Almeida and Heitor Villa-Lobos . In 1908 he founded and directed his own orchestra. He also worked as a guitar teacher and wrote schools for the study of cavaquinho. He taught, among others, Ivone Rabelo, who became a well-known guitarist in Brazil. In addition, he worked as a civil servant in the Ministry of Agriculture. His most successful compositions include the waltz Miragem and the two Brazilian tangos Ipiranga and Guanabara .
