Camille Erlanger (born May 25, 1863 in Paris ; † April 24, 1919 there ) was a French composer.

Life

Camille Erlanger studied at the Paris Conservatory with Léo Delibes and won the Premier Grand Prix de Rome in 1888 with the cantata Veleda . During the stay in Rome following the award, he wrote his first opera, Saint Julien l'hospitalier, based on a story by Gustave Flaubert . It was premiered at the Paris Conservatory in 1894 and made him famous in Paris.

The most successful of his operas was Aphrodite , which was premiered in 1906 in the Opéra-Comique with Mary Garden in the leading role. Erlanger's last work, Forfaiture, was the first opera based on a feature film ( The Cheat ) and was premiered at the Opéra-Comique after Erlanger's death in 1921. In addition to operas, Erlanger also composed several serenades, a symphonic suite ( La Chasse fantastique ) and songs based on Russian folk poems.

Camille Erlanger He was buried in the Père Lachaise cemetery in Paris. Erlanger's son is the historian and founder of the Cannes Film Festival , Philippe Erlanger .
