Philippe Erlanger

Philippe Erlanger (born July 11, 1903 in Paris , † November 23, 1987 in Cannes ) was a French journalist , art critic , historian and high civil servant . He co-founded the Cannes Film Festival .

Philippe Erlanger was the son of the famous French musician Camille Erlanger and Irene Illel-Manoach (from the Camondo family) (1878-1920). This marriage was divorced on March 6, 1912.

He studies art and law in Paris and received a diploma from the Private School for Political Science.

As early as 1939 Erlanger had the idea of ​​a Cannes Festival together with the then French Minister of Culture, Jean Zay , which was first held in 1946. In 1953 and 1954 Erlanger was a member of the jury.

Above all, his numerous published biographies are known, with his biography of Louis XIV even being voted at the top of the historical works of the century by the newspaper Le Figaro littéraire .

Philippe Erlanger remained unmarried and died without offspring.
