Emánuel Moór [ ˈɛmaːnuɛl ˈmoːr ] (born February 19, 1863 in Kecskemét , Austrian Empire , † October 20, 1931 in Chardonne , Switzerland ) was a Hungarian composer , pianist and inventor and brother of the painter Henrik Moor .

Life

Emanuel Moór was born as the son of the opera singer and cantor Rafael Moór, who gave him his first lessons. He studied composition in Budapest with Robert Volkmann , in Vienna with Anton Door and Anton Bruckner . At the age of 18 he became a piano teacher at the Conservatory of Music in Szeged . Between 1885 and 1897 he undertook concert tours that took him to the USA , where he also performed with the singer Lilli Lehmann . In 1888 he married Anita Burke in England and became a British citizen. George Henschel stood up for his orchestral music. From there he moved to Switzerland in 1901.

Since a meeting with the cellist Pablo Casals in 1905, the latter decisively promoted his music and its distribution among his colleagues. The second cello concerto is dedicated to Pablo Casals. The cello double concerto was performed across Europe by Casals and his then partner Guilhermina Suggia . Moór wrote a triple concerto for the Trio Casals, Alfred Cortot and Jacques Thibaud . Casals, André Hekking , Joseph Salmon and Diran Alexanian gave the world premiere of the cello quartet op.95.

After the First World War he devoted himself to making musical instruments and invented a double piano, the Duplex-Coupler Grand Pianoforte , in which two manuals on top of each other could be coupled, which was built by Pleyel , Bechstein (1929), Steinway & Sons and Bösendorfer , among others . After the death of his first wife Anita in 1922, he married the pianist Winifred Christie in 1923 , who became the most ardent proponent of the double manual grand piano .

In addition to five operas and eight symphonies , he composed four piano, four violin and two cello concertos, one viola and one harp concerto, a triple concerto for violin, cello and piano, chamber music works, a requiem and songs .
