Rudolf Piehlmayer (born August 24, 1961 in Straubing ) is a German conductor .

Life

Piehlmayer studied piano with Herbert Spitzenberger , clarinet with Gerd Starke and conducting with Hermann Michael at the University of Music and Theater in Munich . He also received master classes from Leonard Bernstein and Sergiu Celibidache .

In 1991 he was engaged as a solo repetitor at the Regensburg Theater , where he was appointed First Kapellmeister and subsequently Deputy General Music Director. In 1999 he took over the world premiere of Gisbert Näther's Der kleine Prinz with Mario Adorf and the orchestra of the Deutsche Oper Berlin for Marcello Viotti . There he was invited to other guest conductors. He directed Orff's Carmina Burana , Mozart's Magic Flute , Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice and Wagner's The Flying Dutchman .

In the 2001/02 season he was Principal Conductor at the Theater St. Gallen with Donizetti's La fille du régiment , Puccini's La Bohème and Smetana's The Bartered Bride .

From 2002 to 2009 Piehlmayer was general music director of the State Theater Augsburg and conductor of the symphony concerts of the Augsburg Philharmonic . With the revival of Richard Strauss' Der Rosenkavalier , he made his debut with the Gewandhausorchester at the Leipzig Opera in January 2002 . As part of the Salzburg Culture Days 2004 he conducted Strauss' Salome at the Salzburg Festival Hall with the Salzburg Mozarteum Orchestra.

In July 2005, Rudolf Piehlmayer conducted the Augsburg premiere of Gustav Mahler's 8th Symphony with the Augsburg Philharmonic on the occasion of the 450th anniversary of the Peace of Augsburg . In August of the same year he was invited to the Herrenchiemsee Festival by Intendant Enoch zu Guttenberg to conduct the Sinfonia Varsovia with works by Strauss, Wagner and Berlioz.

From 2007 to August 2010 he was Principal Guest Conductor of the Leipzig Opera and during this time he led over 80 performances, such as the revivals of Mozart's Magic Flute , Puccini's Manon Lescaut , Adams Giselle , Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker , Verdi's La Traviata , as well as other performances of Bizet's Carmen , Orff's Carmina Burana and Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretel .

In January 2011 he directed the premiere of Massenet's Werther at the Magdeburg Theater. At the 2011 Eutin Festival , he was responsible for the musical direction of Mozart's Don Giovanni and Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretel .

At Den Norske Opera & Ballet Oslo he opened the 2011/12 season in a co-production with the Institute of National Performing Arts Beijing and Hong Kong Opera with the premiere of Mozart's Magic Flute , directed by Paul Curran. In September 2012 he led the South Germany tour of the Musashino Akademia Musicae in Tokyo a. a. with Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3 and Tchaikovsky's 6th Symphony.

Piehlmayer works a. a. at international music academies such as the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo , the Conservatoire de Rouen in France and since 2014 regularly as a visiting professor at the Musashino Academia Musicae in Tokyo.

He has worked closely with the Orchester Symphonique du Bretagne in Rennes and the Orchester de l'Opéra Rouen Haut-Normandie since 2014. As a guest he regularly conducts at the Opéra de Rennes, the Grand Théatre Angers and the Opéra Graslin in Nantes .
