Otto Kronthaler
Otto Kronthaler (born September 26, 1957 in Schrobenhausen ) is a German clarinetist , teacher and instrument maker .
Life
At the age of 15, Kronthaler took his first clarinet lessons with Georg Lechner, who was then solo clarinetist of the Augsburg Philharmonic . After graduating from high school, he completed his military service in the Munich Air Force Music Corps in Neubiberg. This was followed by a teaching degree for the secondary school with the subjects of Catholic religious studies and music at the University of Augsburg . After the state examination , he began private clarinet studies and completed an audition with the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra , where he was given a permanent position. As a result of facial paralysis , he had to end his career for the time being.
He began retraining as a woodwind instrument maker , which he completed with a journeyman's certificate. With his wife Johanna Kronthaler he went into business for himself and designed completely new clarinets, which enabled him to perform as a clarinetist again. In 1989 he taught clarinet and saxophone at the Bad Königshofen (Rhön) vocational school for music . He then worked in various orchestras and had chamber music and solo appearances. At the same time he was working on his doctoral thesis , which he completed in 2000 at the Berlin University of the Arts .
The first teaching position at the University of Music Würzburg was followed by a ten-year substitute professorship at the University of Music Karlsruhe and a teaching position at the University of Music and Performing Arts Mannheim . He worked regularly with the Balthasar Neumann Ensemble under the direction of Thomas Hengelbrock and the Concentus Musicus Vienna under the direction of Nikolaus Harnoncourt .
In 2005 he moved with his wife and the clarinet company from Bad Neustadt to Karlsruhe-Durlach . At the age of 50 he ended his teaching and concert activities and concentrated on new developments in clarinet construction.
