André Hekking (born July 20, 1866 in Bordeaux , † December 14, 1925 in Paris ) was a French cellist of Dutch origin.

Life

André Hekking came from a well-known family of musicians, which also included cellists Anton Hekking and Gérard Hekking (cousins).

On a trip to America, where his brother had found an engagement for a few years, he played a cello concerto by Anton Rubinstein at a charity concert in Carnegie Hall on May 17, 1896 . In 1909 he settled in Paris as a music teacher and in 1919 became a professor at the Conservatoire de Paris . There Pierre Fournier became one of his students.

Camille Saint-Saëns dedicated the composition “Prière” for violoncello and organ, op. 158, to him in 1919. Charles Tournemire dedicated the sonata for violoncello and piano, op. 5 to him.

It is unclear whether he or Gérard participated in the premiere of Gabriel Fauré's string quartet in E minor, op. 121 at the Société Nationale de Musique in Paris on June 12, 1925. With Pablo Casals , Joseph Salmon and Diran Alexanian he gave the world premiere of the cello quartet op. 95 (1909) by Emánuel Moór , who in 1910 also dedicated a "Suite for violin and cello" op. 109 to him and George Enescu .

Hekking has played since 1874 on a cello made by the Italian violin maker Domenico Montagnana in 1721 . His daughter Jeanne married from Mirecourt originating violin maker Marcel Vatelot, his grandson is the luthier Étienne Vatelot, among other things, for Tabea Zimmermann , a viola built.
