Lilli Lehmann
Lilli Lehmann (actually Elisabeth Maria Lehmann , later Elisabeth Maria Lehmann-Kalisch ; born November 24, 1848 in Würzburg , † May 17, 1929 in Berlin ) was a German opera singer ( soprano ) and singing teacher.
Life
Lehmann and her younger sister Marie (1851–1931) spent their childhood in Prague and were trained by celist Müller and by their mother, the singer and harpist Maria Theresia Löw (1809–1885). Lehmann's father was the hero tenor Karl August Lehmann .
Lehmann made her debut in 1865 as the first boy in Mozart's Magic Flute at the Deutsches Landestheater in Prague, followed by engagements in Gdansk and Leipzig and at the Berlin Court Opera (1870–1885). Initially employed as a coloratura soprano , she soon also sang dramatic parts, in 1876 at Richard Wagner's request the Woglinde, the Helmwige and the voice of the forest bird at the premiere of the Ring des Nibelungen . In 1885 she accepted an invitation from the Metropolitan Opera (Met) in New York City , where she was celebrated as an outstanding interpreter of German and Italian opera roles.
Lehmann married the tenor Paul Kalisch (1855–1946) in 1888 . The marriage resulted in a son (David). Lehmann returned to Germany with her family in 1891 and later returned to the ensemble of the Berlin Court Opera. In the following years she made guest appearances in the USA, Paris and London and worked as a singing teacher. Her students included Gustav Zeitzschel , Emmy Krüger and Franz Egenieff . Lehmann was one of the most important Wagner and Mozart interpreters of the time. In Berlin she belonged to the circle around Marie von Schleinitz .
At Lehmann's suggestion, the Salzburg Mozart Festival dates back to 1901–1910, when she appeared as a singer and directed. In 1916 she founded the Summer Academy at the Mozarteum Conservatory, which, today organized by the Mozarteum University , is one of the world's largest and most renowned institutions of its kind with over 60 master classes.
