Helene Winterstein-Kambersky , b. Vierthaler (born March 13, 1900 in Vienna ; † December 6, 1966 in Hinterbrühl ) was a singer and inventor of the world's first waterproof mascara .

Helene Winterstein-Kambersky comes from an old family of musicians. She was the great-great-granddaughter of the Salzburg composer and founder of the Austrian elementary school system Michael Vierthaler , who studied music with Mozart's father Leopold and Joseph Haydn and was a sponsor of Franz Schubert , to whom he also dedicated an anthem.

Career as a singer

Her singing career began in the early twenties of the 20th century. She was a student of Lilli Lehmann , the opera singer and singing teacher from Salzburg. Due to her fine and dramaturgically highly developed song interpretations by composers such as Mozart, Franz Schubert to Wolf and Pfitzner, she has won multiple prizes at international singing competitions. In 1937 Helene Winterstein-Kambersky was the first woman to sing in front of a darkened auditorium. Her stage name as a singer was Nussy .

Cosmetics entrepreneur

Dependent on the wheelchair due to lead poisoning in the 1920s, she invented the world's first waterproof mascara in parallel with her singing career. After about two thousand attempts, she made the patented recipe known far beyond the borders of Austria under the name La Bella Nussy . In 1936, Helene Winterstein-Kambersky founded a cosmetics company that is still family-owned and produces the recipe almost unchanged. Today, in its black color variant, it consists of water, bleached beeswax, a non-allergenic, mutagenic, carcinogenic or teratogenic hydrocarbon mixture, linseed oil, castor oil, and the food coloring agent iron oxide black (E 172). In contrast to the vast majority of mascara commonly used today, it is therefore not a question of ink, but of a cream; this means that it does not harden completely after application, which means that the lashes retain some of their flexibility. The product design is also based in part on the historical original, in particular tubes with spirals are still being sold, which represent the forerunners of today's round brushes.

A special postage stamp in honor of Helene Winterstein-Kambersky's inventive and entrepreneurial achievement has been issued by the Austrian Post since 2013 .
