Paul Kalisch (born November 6, 1855 in Berlin , † January 27, 1946 in St. Lorenz , Upper Austria ) was a German opera singer ( tenor ).

Life

Paul Kalisch was born in Berlin in 1855 as one of five children of the Jewish writer and founder of the Kladderadatsch David Kalisch and his wife Sophia. Kalisch was supposed to be an architect, but changed his plans after he performed some songs by Franz Schubert and Richard Wagner at a meeting in the house of his brother-in-law Paul Lindau and was then approached by Adelina Patti about a career at the opera. Shortly afterwards Kalisch traveled to Italy to study singing with Leoni and Giovanni Battista Lamperti . In 1880 he made his debut as Edgardo in the opera Lucia di Lammermoor in Varese . After a very successful tour through Italy and Spain in 1883 he sang at the royal opera houses in Munich , Berlin and Vienna , as well as at the city theaters in Hamburg , Leipzig and Cologne .

In 1888 Kalisch married the soprano Lilli Lehmann and traveled to London , where he performed in Tristan and Isolde . After the end of this engagement, Kalisch moved to the United States , where he sang four seasons at the Metropolitan Opera in New York and toured America two seasons with Anton Seidl .

After his return to Europe and a tour of Germany, engagements in Vienna, Budapest , Paris and London followed. However, he celebrated his greatest success in Wiesbaden at the festival there, when he appeared in front of the royal family. Shortly afterwards he was appointed chamber singer by Ernst II of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha .

Also after his return, he separated from his wife, but without divorce. In 1904 he sang again with her at the Grand Opéra Paris. He spent his twilight years in the villa built by his wife in St. Lorenz am Mondsee.
