Spirals

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Spiralen is a waltz by Johann Strauss Sohn (op. 209). The work was performed for the first time on January 31, 1853 in the Redouten Hall of the Vienna Hofburg .

Remarks

The waltz was composed for Mardi Gras in 1858 and premiered on the occasion of the Railway Engineers' Ball in the Vienna Hofburg. The work that was also dedicated to these engineers was very well received. It has also been adopted into the repertoire of military bands. The audience was also enthusiastic in Russia, where Strauss performed the waltz during his summer trip in 1856. Over time, however, the work became less well known. The first melody of the waltz was continued in the operetta Die Landstreicher by Carl Michael Ziehrer (1843–1922). The operetta waltz song Be praised, you cozy night is clearly audible a plagiarism of the Strauss theme. Ziehrer never admitted this, but it is clearly verifiable.

The playing time on the CD listed under individual records is 10 minutes and 56 seconds. Depending on the musical conception of the conductor, this time can change by up to a minute plus or minus.
