Life

Rosa Agthe was born on June 25, 1827 in a music-loving family in Weimar. She received piano lessons from her father, Friedrich Wilhelm Agthe , a chamber musician . When her singing talent was recognized, she took singing lessons for three years with the tenor Franz Götze (1814–1888). On June 9, 1845, she had her first stage appearance in Weimar as Amina in Bellini's La sonnambula ( The Night Walker ).

She made her official debut as a permanent singer at the Weimar Court Theater in September 1848 in the opera Jessonda by Louis Spohr (1784-1859). There she sang the role of Jessonda . She had great success as a Wagner interpreter . She played Elisabeth in Tannhäuser and the Singers' War in Wartburg . On August 28, 1850, she played the role of Elsa in Wagner's opera Lohengrin at the premiere .

In July 1851 she married the singer Hans Feodor von Milde (1821–1899), who had also been employed by the Weimar court theater since 1848. The Milde couple had two biological children, Franz von Milde (1855–1929) and Rudolf von Milde (1859–1927), who also became singers, and their adopted daughter, Natalie von Milde (1850–1906). Rosa and Hans Feodor often appeared together in one piece, for example as Senta and Holländer in the opera Der Fliegende Holländer .

Rosa von Milde around 1905

In 1867 Rosa von Milde said goodbye to the Weimar stage. The reason was personal differences between her and the new director Franz von Dingelstedt (1814–1881). She then worked as a singing teacher and from 1876 at the Weimar Music School . On December 6, 1906, Grand Duke Carl Alexander awarded her the great gold medal for art and science. Remarks

  1. Ludwig Eisenberg writes in his book Großes biographisches Lexikon der Deutschen Bühne im XIX. Century . Verlag von Paul List , Leipzig 1903, p. 677, ( Textarchiv - Internet Archive ): born on June 25, 1827 in Weimar, daughter of a grand ducal chamber musician , that applies to Friedrich Wilhelm Agthe, even without a specific name. He gives Rosa Agthe's birth name completely incorrectly as Gathe .
