Arturo Berutti

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Arturo Berutti (born March 14, 1858 in San Juan , † January 3, 1938 in Buenos Aires ) was an Argentine composer .

Berutti studied in Buenos Aires Law . A scholarship because of his musical talent gave him the opportunity in 1884 to go to Europe to study music. He began his training at the Conservatory in Leipzig with Carl Reinecke and Salomon Jadassohn and continued in Paris in 1889 and in Milan in 1890 . Here he was decisively influenced by the Italian opera . After returning to his homeland in 1896, he continued his operatic work, which he had already begun in Europe, using libretti with South American themes. He became the most important Argentine opera composer of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The lasting Italian influence in his works, however, prevented their permanent stage presence in Argentina, they were completely displaced over the years by "national" operas, which were indebted to the folklore of his homeland.
