The extravagants

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Die Extravaganten is a waltz by Johann Strauss Sohn (op. 205). The work was first performed on January 26, 1858 in the Sofienbad Hall in Vienna.

Remarks

The work was written for Mardi Gras in 1858 and dedicated to law students at the University of Vienna. Therefore, the world premiere also took place during the annual lawyers' ball. The title Extravaganzen refers to the waltz itself. The composer has changed or expanded the traditional waltz style. He therefore viewed the work as outside the previous norm, i.e. as extravagant. The waltz was well received by the public and was considered to be one of the best Strauss works of the carnival season of 1858. The critics, especially Eduard Hanslick , could not find anything positive about the waltz and did everything to make it bad. Nevertheless, the waltz has remained in the concert programs to this day.

The playing time on the CD listed under individual records is 7 minutes and 18 seconds. Depending on the musical conception of the conductor, this time can vary by up to about a minute plus or minus.
