Antonio García Gutiérrez

Antonio María de los Dolores García Gutiérrez (* 5 July 1813 in Chiclana de la Frontera province of Cadiz , †  6. August 1884 in Madrid ) was a Spanish poet, playwright and librettist of romance . He is best known for his drama El trovador , which was the source for Verdi's opera The Troubadour (1853). The custom is said to go back to the enthusiastically received first performance of this work on March 1, 1836 in the Teatro del Príncipe in Madrid that the author of a drama is called on the stage after the performance to receive the applause of the audience. With his piece Simón Bocanegra (1843), García Gutiérrez also provided the stage template for Verdi's opera Simon Boccanegra .

Life

Antonio García Gutiérrez began studying medicine, which he broke off. After achieving such great success with his drama El trovador at the age of only 22 , he decided to devote himself entirely to literature. In 1844 he went to Cuba , later to Mexico and did not return to Spain until 1850 , where he was showered with honors. He was director of the National Archaeological Museum and the National Library and in 1862 became a member of the Real Academia Española . As a Spanish consul he worked in Bayonne and Geneva from 1870 to 1872. Among other things, he also translated some comedies by Eugène Scribe and novels by Alexandre Dumas .

El trovador (1836)

Drama in five acts, in which prose and verse are mixed and which takes place in Aragon in the 15th century. Formally, the drama is characterized by frequent changes of scene and the fact that two parallel stories, that of the gypsy's revenge and the love story, are linked.

Content : The troubadour Manrique, son of a gypsy (Azucena), loves Leonor, whom Conde de Luna is also freeing for. She goes to a monastery because she thinks Manrique is dead, but he finds her and they both flee. The count takes her prisoner, Leonor commits suicide when Manrique is sentenced to death. After the execution, the gypsy confesses to the count that the troubadour was his brother and that she had stolen him to take revenge for her mother's execution at the stake.

One saw elements of a hidden class struggle in the play , as it is about love between unequal classes. Similar social revolutionary elements can also be found in other plays by García Gutiérrez.
