La Favorite polka

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The La Favorite Polka is a polka française by Johann Strauss II (op. 217). The work was first performed on September 30, 1858 in Pavlovsk , Russia.

Remarks

The polka was created in the summer of 1858 during the composer's trip to Russia. There it was premiered under the title Reussen-Polka . Strauss wanted to pay homage to the Russian people, because Reussen was simply another word for Russians. In Vienna the work came out under the name La Favorite-Polka . It was included in the Strauss Chapel's carnival program and listed as an alleged novelty in the Volksgarten on March 13, 1859 . The polka was soon forgotten and was rarely performed, if at all. This was also due to the fact that the composer's many compositions sometimes displaced each other from the concert schedule. There was simply an oversupply of such works.

The playing time on the CD listed under individual records is 3 minutes and 56 seconds. This time can vary somewhat depending on the conductor's musical conception.
