Braulio Dueño Colón

Braulio Dueño Colón (born March 26, 1854 in San Juan , † April 4, 1934 in Bayamón ) was a Puerto Rican composer .

Life

Colón was first taught by his father and later was a student of the Italian composer Rosario Aruti , but mostly a musical self-taught . In his youth he composed dancas and folkloric music before the Zarzuela Los baños de Coamo was written in 1877 and the overture La Amistad , which was awarded the Premio del Ateneo and with which he became known as a composer.

As a flautist, he was a member of the Bayamón Cathedral chapel, and he founded and directed the Bayamón Municipal Orchestra. His overture Noche de Otoño was performed in Puerto Rico and Spain in 1997, while his Ave Maria for vocal quartet and orchestra had great success in the USA in 1901. Other sacred works were the Padre Nuestro for organ and mezzo-soprano, La Salve and a mass. In 1904, the Cantos Escolares , songs based on poems by Manuel Fernández Juncos , Virgilio Dávila and others , were published as his main work for school use.
