Elisen polka

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Elisen-Polka is a polka française by Johann Strauss Sohn (op. 151). The work was performed for the first time on May 7, 1854 in the Volksgarten in Vienna .

Remarks

This polka was the first so-called polka française that Johann Strauss performed in Vienna. This genre was a French variety of the classic polka, which has broken away from its Bohemian-Polish roots and is comparatively more elegant and supple. This new style quickly became popular in Vienna and, besides Strauss himself, many other composers of the time composed works in this style. The name probably goes back to a lady of the company named Elise, who according to plans of the mother of Johann Strauss should become his wife. But that didn't happen. At that time, however, there was also an unconfirmed rumor that the name was a tribute to Empress Elisabeth of Austria-Hungary .

The playing time on the CD listed under individual records is 3 minutes and 28 seconds. This time can vary somewhat depending on the conductor's musical conception.
