Life

Marie Fillunger was born in Vienna in 1850 as the daughter of the engineer Johann Fillunger (1807–1879). He was born in 1842 with Josefine. von Rosthorn (1820–1904) married, with whom he had seven other children. The mother was a daughter of the industrialist Matthäus von Rosthorn jun. (1782–1855), who, together with his brother August von Rosthorn (1789–1843) and other siblings, founded the village of Oed near Waldegg , where the “Rosthorn brothers” built a sheet metal and wire factory from 1816 to 1822.

Marie Fillunger made her debut in 1868 as "Olga" in Offenbach's Grand Duchess von Gerolstein at the Theater an der Wien , to which she belonged until 1872. In addition, she studied from 1869 to 1873 at the Conservatory of the Society of Friends of Music in Vienna with Mathilde Marchesi . On the recommendation of Johannes Brahms , she continued her studies from 1874 to 1879 at the Hochschule für Musik in Berlin , where she was taught by Adolf Schulze . During this time, a love affair began between her and Eugenie Schumann (1851–1938), the daughter of Clara and Robert Schumann . Marie Fillunger's 800 letters to Eugenie Schumann from the years 1875 to 1893, which are also of interest from a musical sociological perspective, were published in excerpts by Eva Rieger in 2002 .

From 1879 Marie Fillunger lived in Frankfurt am Main , initially in her own apartment (Kleine Wiesenau 8), but gave it up in 1884 to move to Clara Schumann's house at Myliusstraße 32.

In August 1889 she moved to London , where she was best known as an interpreter of the songs by Schubert and Brahms. She went on concert tours through Australia and South Africa . From 1904 to 1912 she taught at the Royal College of Music in Manchester . She then stayed in her home town of Vienna again and went to Switzerland in 1914, where she moved in again with Eugenie Schumann in Matten near Interlaken .
