Mathilde Marchesi de Castrone (born Mathilde Lisette Sophie Jeanette Graumann ; born March 24, 1821 in Frankfurt am Main , † November 17, 1913 in London ) was a German opera singer ( mezzo-soprano ) and music teacher .

Life

Mathilde Marchesi was a niece of Beethoven's friend Dorothea von Ertmann . She studied singing in Paris with Manuel Patricio Rodríguez García . In 1849 she made her debut as a singer. In 1854 she began her career as a music teacher at the Musikfreunde Vienna Conservatory . She went to Paris in 1861, to Cologne in 1865 and back to Vienna in 1868. From 1881 she was back in Paris.

Mathilde Marchesi was married to Salvatore de Castrone (stage name: Salvatore Marchesi ) (1830–1908), an Italian baritone . They were the parents of the soprano Blanche Marchesi (1863-1940).

In 1957 the Marchesigasse in Vienna- Donaustadt (22nd district) was named after her.
