Dietrich (Poland)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dietrich (Polish Dytryk ; * around 995 ; † after 1033 ) was duke and co-regent of Poland around 1033. He came from the Piast family .

Life

Dietrich was a grandson of the Polish Duke Mieszko I (r. 960–992) and his second wife Oda von Haldensleben . His father was one of their sons, either Mieszko or Swantopolk , half-brothers of the incumbent Polish king Mieszko II. Lambert (r. 1025-1034).

Dietrich appeared on the court day of the Holy Roman Empire in Merseburg in 1033 as a pretender to the Polish throne and was installed as co-regent in Poland by Emperor Conrad II, alongside Mieszko II. Lambert and his brother Otto . It is disputed among historians whether Dietrich ever entered the territory of Poland. It can be assumed that at best he could hold on to the Pomeranian periphery and thus outside of Poland proper. A few months after the installation, the co-regent Otto died and Mieszko Lambert reappeared as sole ruler.

Remarks

  1. More likely titular duke of Poland.
  2. Mieszko Lambert's father, Bolesław I. Chrobry , had his stepmother Oda and her underage children, including Dietrich's father, expelled from Oda's Saxon homeland immediately after he came to power in 992, in order to enforce their own succession (see E. Mühle: Die Piasts p. 22).
