from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Oda von Haldensleben (* before 962, † 1023 ) was the second Christian wife of the Polish Duke Mieszko I and by marriage from 978 to 992 Duchess of Poland .

Life

Oda was born as the daughter of Dietrich, Margrave of the Nordmark . According to the sources, she was a nun in the Benedictine monastery at Kalbe until, with the consent of Mieszko's father, she was "kidnapped" and taken in 978 as a wife.

Oda, her sons, as well as her spouse, appear in a document 80 to 90 years later known as Dagome Iudex .

This reference from the 11th century is considered by historians to be the first document of the state of Poland under the Piasts .

After her stepson Bolesław I. Chrobry , 992, came to power, she and her children were expelled from the country and sought protection and acceptance in their Saxon homeland .

Marriage and offspring

From the marriage with Duke Mieszko I three sons emerged: Mieszko , Swantopolk and Lambert .

Remarks

  1. ↑ Which is described in the document with the name "Dagome". According to one hypothesis, Mieszko I (Latin Mesco ) was baptized under the “Christian” name Dagobert when he was baptized in 966 and was the Italian copyist (of the now lost deed of gift Mieszko I to the Holy See from the 10th century) and author des Dagome Iudex shortened both names to "Dagome".
