Benet Brell i Clos , OSB , (* 1786 in Barcelona ; † 1850 in the Montserrat Monastery ) was a Catalan conductor , composer , organist and Benedictine monk of the Montserrat Monastery . Benet Brell headed the Escolania de Montserrat from 1828 to 1835 .

life and work

Benet Brell entered the Escola de Montserrat at the age of ten . Here he was a student of Narcís Casanoves and Josep Vinyals . In this early phase of his music education, great emphasis was placed on organ playing. In 1803 he joined the Order of the Benedictines. From the beginning he practiced the art of composition with a number of vocal works. His training was interrupted by the French Wars (1808 to 1814). This war completely destroyed the monastery.

Benet Brell was one of those who worked hardest to revive the choir and the music archive. He combined these activities with composing sacred works and studying keyboard instruments. From 1828 to 1835 he was choirmaster of the Escolania de Montserrat . Most of his great vocal works were composed during this period.

He also looked for the instruments and the scores of the great masters of Montserrat and thus worked on the recovery of the repertoire. The seizure of the monastery in 1835 meant another 16-year end for the same. Father Jacint Boada succeeded in reopening the monastery in 1851, which Benet Brell did not live to see.

As an experienced organist, Brell was also an outstanding improviser. He was also an excellent composer who served different genres. He composed orchestral symphonies for the Escolania, sonatas, organ pieces, minuets, waltzes and much more. Despite the shy accents of the beginning romanticism, Brell clearly belongs to the musical classics .
