Narcís Casanoves i Bertran

Narcís Casanoves i Bertran OSB (born February 17, 1747 in Sabadell , † April 1, 1799 in La Vinya Vella (near Esparreguera )) was a Catalan composer , organist , conductor and Benedictine monk of the Montserrat monastery . Along with Anselm Viola , Josep Martí and Benet Julià, he was an outstanding representative of the 18th century organ school of Montserrat .

life and work

In 1757 Casanoves entered the Escolania de Montserrat to study music and was trained in music by Josep Martí and Benet Julià . Benet Valls was his teacher for the organ . In 1763 he joined the order as a monk. Casanoves was an excellent organist, improviser and composer. He became the organist of the monastery. In the last years of his life he also worked as a teacher at Escolania.

He composed numerous Latin-language vocal works, some with organ or orchestral accompaniment, such as masses , responsories for Holy Week, psalms, antiphons and motets . He also wrote organ music in the Italian style. To this day, his works are frequently performed in the Montserrat monastery.

As an organ artist, Casanoves was admired by his contemporaries because of his outstanding dexterity and his easy and intelligent playing, especially when improvising. In his compositions, despite their simplicity, the elegance and delicacy of the voice guidance and the musical expressiveness must be emphasized.
