Josep Antoni Martí (* 1719 in Tortosa ; † January 3, 1763 in Montserrat Monastery ) was a Spanish composer from Catalonia .

Life

Nothing is known about childhood and adolescence. After his ordination he worked in Madrid as the organist of the Real Sociedad , where he first encountered the music of Domenico Scarlatti , who worked in Spain, and the "modern" Italian style he had brought with him. In 1749 he was organist at the Nuestra Señora de la Soledad church in Madrid. He then joined the Benedictine order of the famous monastery of Montserrat , after professing on August 9, 1753, he was appointed conductor and director of the local music school , where he held these functions until his death.

Martí left behind an extensive, incompletely preserved church music work, consisting of Christmas carols, responsories , chants for choir and orchestra as well as organ and piano sonatas . Compared to the work of other baroque composers, his style is kept rather simple.

Martí was responsible for the transition of the renowned Montserratin music school to the modern Italian style and had important students such as Anselm Viola i Valentí (1738–1798) and Narcís Casanoves (1747–1799).
