Benet Julià i Ros

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Benet Julià i Ros OSB , according to other sources also Benet Julià i Julià (born February 3, 1727 in Torroella de Montgrí , † December 5, 1787 in Montserrat Monastery ), was a Catalan organist and composer of the Montserrat School . He worked for a long time as the organist of the Montserrat monastery.

life and work

Benet Julià probably attended the Escolania de Montserrat from 1736 or 1737 to 1745 for his musical education . Benet Esteve was one of his first teachers there. He later also became a student of Antonio Soler . In 1746 Julià joined the Benedictine order as a monk. It is very likely that in 1763 he replaced Josep Martí as head of Escolania for a short time before Anselm Viola was appointed to this position.

Julià wrote works for keyboard instruments, the sonata for clarins (organ register), a funeral mass and a misery , the latter two for double choir and orchestra. Even the few traditional compositions by Julià clearly show the skillful articulation of the old-style polyphony , the homophonic texture and the Italian elements in the classical style.
