Wegner was a daughter of the theater manager Kramer, who died very early. Her mother soon married the singer Adolf Wegner in her second marriage and he adopted Ernestine with the marriage. She received her first artistic lessons from her stepfather, so that she was able to successfully debut in her hometown in the role of "Hansl" at an early age. This performance was followed by smaller vocal roles, page appearances and other silent roles .

When her parents signed a contract in Switzerland, Wegner accompanied them and performed several times; u. a. in several soubrette roles with Walburg-Kramer (Luzern-St. Galler Theater). It was there that the actor Carl Baditz saw her and recommended her to theater director Arthur Woltersdorff in Berlin at the beginning of 1868 . This engaged her and on May 1st, 1868 she was seen on the stage of the Woltersdorff Theater as "Goldelse".

In the winter of 1871/72 she brought Chéri Maurice to the Thalia Theater in Hamburg . In 1873 she engaged Franz Wallner to Berlin ( Wallner Theater ). There she was seen for the first time on May 6, 1873 as a "light person". Mostly she performed together with the comedian Karl Helmerding and from then on she proudly called her audience our Berlin Gallmeyer . Ludolf Waldmann , among other things a poet and composer in the field of light music, dedicated the so-called “Wegner Waltz” to her in 1881: Oh, a waltz is my life .

At the beginning of the 1880s, a wealthy admirer, unknown to this day (as of 2014), gave the Theresienhof am Scharmützelsee to Ernestine . After Ernestine's early death in November 1883, Emilia Wegner was born. Kramer, probably a younger sister, is recorded in the land register as the owner. According to a letter, the stepfather Adolf Wegner also lived on the estate at least in 1890 , before the farm was resold, probably in 1892.

The ensign Bernhard - one of her signature roles - was the artist 112 times, and in this role to Wegner adopted on 30 April 1883 by its audience. Sickly for some time, she went to Bad Pyrmont for a cure . Since there was no improvement whatsoever, she took another cure in Wiesbaden in September of the same year, where she died on November 2, 1883. Her funeral took place on November 6th at Friedhof II of the Georgen Parochial Community in Berlin-Friedrichshain and a moving funeral service was held in her honor in the Wallnertheater.

reception

Of the countless roles that she created and then often played a hundred times ("Lieschen Spröde" 288 times) in a row, each one was highly original and characteristic, carried by a brilliant mood and warm humor. Through guest appearances she also achieved great success in other cities (namely in Vienna in 1876 ).

“Ernestine Wegner was not only able to provoke laughter, she also knew how to strike and stir soft, sentimental tones. None of us, who we have seen her so often, has forgotten the impression she was sure to produce when, as a funny but kind-hearted, noble sister, she twisted her mouth and frowned at her unwary brother over him to make bitter reproaches for reckless lifestyle; when, as a benevolent friend, with suppressed tears, she secretly brought the poor abandoned man a basket of food and slipped a thaler into his hand; when, as a very young mother, at the cradle of her sick child, she sent fervent requests to heaven in a tear-choked voice "
