Alexander Sergeyevich Taneyev ( Russian Александр Сергеевич Танеев * 5 . Jul / 17th January  1850 greg. In Saint Petersburg , † January 25 jul. / 7. February  1918 greg. In Petrograd ) was a Russian composer .

Life

Taneyev came from a musical family. His father, full-time director of the Imperial Chancellery and privy councilor , was a passionate amateur composer, his mother played the piano excellently. The famous composer Sergei Taneyev was also closely related to him, although the widespread assumption that Alexander was Sergei's uncle is incorrect. Taneyev followed in his father's footsteps professionally: after completing his studies, he began a career as a civil servant, which ultimately made him his father's successor as director of the Imperial Chancellery. However, he was also busy with music: he studied in Dresden and St. Petersburg, where Nikolai Rimski-Korsakow was one of his teachers. Throughout his life he maintained contact with famous musicians of his time, namely the members of the Mighty Heap . Taneyev also worked as a folk song collector , which led to his being appointed chairman of the folk music department of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society in 1900. As a composer, he was so respected during his lifetime that the majority of his works were performed. Today, however, Alexander Taneyev is largely forgotten.

Taneyev was married to Nadezhda Illarionovna Tolstaya (1860-1937). They had three children, including their daughter Anna Vyrubowa , who was the closest confidante and maid of the last Russian Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna .

style

Taneyev was a typical representative of the national Russian movement. He dealt intensively with the folklore of his country and let this flow massively into his compositions. This interest goes hand in hand with a solid mastery of the composition craft, which distinguishes him from the original concept of the Mighty Heap, but is definitely representative of his generation of composers. His works are characterized by clear design, skilful instrumentation and well thought-out thematic work. His style shows similarities to Alexander Borodin and Pyotr Tchaikovsky , however, has little peculiarities on why he epigonism has been criticized for.
