Ozark Jubilee
Ozark Jubilee was the first prime-time television show featuring country music to be broadcast by a major US network .
history
A local forerunner was started in 1953 by Ely E. Siman in Springfield, Missouri . On January 22, 1955, the show was first broadcast on national television by ABC . The broadcast from the Springfield Jewell Theater usually lasted an hour, and from mid-1955 onwards, 90 minutes. The moderator was the renowned country musician Red Foley . After Foley had to appear in court for tax evasion, the show was suspended in September 1960.
For the first time, the Ozark Jubilee gave a US-wide television audience a visual impression of contemporary country music. For many musicians who were previously only known regionally, the show represented an important career springboard. Brenda Lee , Porter Wagoner , Wanda Jackson and others first became known to a wide audience here.
