The Browns was an American country music vocal trio of the late 1950s and 1960s . It consisted of the siblings Jim Ed Brown (born March 1, 1934 in Sparkman, Arkansas , † June 11, 2015 in Franklin, Tennessee ), Maxine Brown (born April 27, 1931 in Campti , Louisiana , † January 21, 2019 ) and Bonnie Brown (born July 31, 1938 in Sparkman, Arkansas, † July 16, 2016 ). Her most famous hit was The Three Bells .

Career

Beginnings

The Browns began their musical career as a duo when Jim Ed and his older sister Maxine first appeared on local radio stations in the early 1950s. In 1954 the first single was recorded on the Fabor label. The own composition Looking Back to See was able to place itself in the country top 10 straight away. Meanwhile, the youngest sister Bonnie had finished school. The duo became a trio. This was followed by an engagement at the Louisiana Hayride Show, with which they gained national fame. In 1955, Here Today and Gone Tomorrow was another top 10 hit.

breakthrough

Her next career move was an engagement with the Ozark Jubilee TV show, which in 1956 led to a record deal with RCA-Victor. Her first two singles, I Take the Chance and I Heard the Bluebirds Sing , nearly reached the top of the country charts. After that, Jim Ed was drafted into the military. Another sister, Norma, took his place during this time.

After Jim Ed's return to civilian life, the trio achieved one of the greatest hits of the 1950s with the folk-oriented The Three Bells . The former hit song by Édith Piaf ( Les trois cloches ) held number one in the country charts for ten weeks and also reached the top position in the pop hit parade. Their extremely finely tuned harmony vocals , for which producer Chet Atkins was responsible, had made them the undisputed leading vocal group.

Their success continued in the next few years, even if no hit comparable to The Three Bells could be booked. Her most famous songs during this time were Scarlet Ribbon , The Old Lamplighter and Send Me the Pillow You Dream On . In 1963 they became a member of the Grand Ole Opry . Her last hits were I Hear It Now and Big Daddy . Then the trio broke up as the now married Maxine and Bonnie wanted to devote more time to their families. Jim Ed Brown had already started his solo career in 1965 and was able to continue it without a major slump. He was successful for many years with his later singing partner Helen Cornelius . Maxine later returned to the music business and the charts for a short time.
