David Houston (musician)
David Houston (born December 9, 1938 in Shreveport , Louisiana , † November 30, 1993 ) was an American country singer who had some number 1 hits in the country charts in the 1960s.
Life
Beginnings
David Houston, a descendant of Southern Generals Robert E. Lee and Sam Houston , grew up in a musical environment. His godfather, Gene Austin , was one of the most successful pop singers of the 1920s. As a child, David already mastered several instruments. At the age of twelve he made his first appearance on the Louisiana Hayride Show, which was an important stepping stone for young musicians. After graduating from high school and some college semesters, he worked for a time as a construction worker and insurance agent.
Career
In 1963, Houston concluded a record deal with the new Epic label through the mediation of songwriter Tillman Franks. His first single, Mountain Of Love , was already in the top 10. The next releases all flopped. It was only when he was looked after by producer Billy Sherrill from 1965 onwards that he was able to build on his initial success. Livin 'In A House Full Of Love peaked at number three on the country charts. In 1966 he made his first number 1 hit with the sentimental ballad Almost Persuaded . The song, composed by Billy Sherrill and Glenn Sutton, won two Grammys .
A year later he topped the country charts three times in a row, including with the duet My Elusive Dreams sung with Tammy Wynette . In May 1968, his track Have A Little Faith reached number 1 on the country charts. The follow-up single Already It's Heaven also reached the top of the country charts in August 1968. His last number one hit came in January 1970 when he took first place for four weeks with the title Baby, Baby (I Know You're A Lady) . This was followed by a long series of top 10 and top 20 successes that lasted into the 1970s. In 1972 he became a member of the Grand Ole Opry . With the young singer Barbara Mandrell he played a few duets, the best known in 1970 After Closing Time . In the middle of the decade his sales figures collapsed, he changed labels several times, but was only able to occupy the lower ranks of the charts.
David Houston died on November 30, 1993 of a cerebral haemorrhage.
