Barbara Mandrell
Barbara Mandrell (born December 25, 1948 in Houston , Texas ) is an American country singer , multi-instrumentalist and two-time Grammy award winner. Between 1969 and 1989 it had 55 hits on the US country charts.
Life
Barbara Mandrell is considered a musical child prodigy who has mastered numerous instruments from an early age. Even Chet Atkins was impressed by her steel guitar playing . She first appeared on a local television show at the age of eleven. A little later she was on stage with well-known country stars such as Johnny Cash and Red Foley . Her music-loving parents founded a family band, The Mandrells, in 1963 with Barbara's younger sisters and two other musicians. The group went on long tours through North America and Asia. Barbara fell in love with the band's drummer , Ken Dudley, and married him after finishing school.
First she withdrew from the music business. When her husband was drafted into the US Navy and stationed overseas, the family moved to Nashville . Supported by her father as a manager, she tried to gain a foothold in the country scene there. In 1969 she signed a record deal with the Columbia label . A year later she hit the charts for the first time with Playin 'Around With Love . She achieved her first top 10 placement in 1971 with Tonight My Baby's Coming Home . A little later she became a member of the Grand Ole Opry . Successful duets such as the top 10 hits After Closing Time (1970) and I Love You, I Love You (1974) were recorded with David Houston .
In 1975 she switched to the ABC label . Under the producer Tom Collins, her style of music changed towards country pop. Almost immediately, sales of their records rose. After a series of top 10 hits , she achieved her first number 1 hit in 1978 with Sleeping Single in a Double Bed . Mandrell moved from ABC to MCA and experienced the high points of her career here. Other top placements followed with (If Loving You Is Wrong) I Don't Want to Be Right (1979), Years (1980), I Was Country When Country Wasn't Cool (1981), Til You're Gone (1982) and One of a Kind Pair of Fools (1983). In 1981 and 1982 she received the CMA Award "Entertainer of the Year" and gold awards for the albums The Best of Barbara Mandrell and Live . She also received two Grammys and numerous other awards.
In 1980 she got her own television show, Barbara Mandrell and The Mandrell Sisters , in which she appeared with her two sisters. Due to overhaul, she had to stop her television appearances in 1982. A year later, she started the stage show This Lady is a Champ in Las Vegas . Her career came to an abrupt halt on September 11, 1984 when she was hospitalized for nearly a year after a serious car accident. Her two children were also injured in the accident. The 19-year-old driver of the second car involved in the accident died. Despite Mandrell's injuries and her absence from the stage, a duet album with Lee Greenwood was released, which included another top 10 hit, To Me . In June 1985, the singer appeared again for the first time at the Music City News Awards. Her comeback album Get to the Heart was released in the fall of 1985.
Country music had changed now. The new traditionalists slowly took the lead. Mandrell's records could still be placed in the charts, but no longer achieved the great successes they once did. Her live performances still found her audience. In 1990 Mandrell wrote her autobiography Get to the Heart: My Story , which stayed in the bestseller lists for months and was made into a film a few years later. In 1997 she ended her career as a country singer, devoted herself briefly to acting and performed in the context of honors such as the 2006 tribute album She Was Country When Country Wasn't Cool: A Tribute to Barbara Mandrell or the induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2009 - the greatest honor of country music - again in public. Mandrell is still married to her childhood sweetheart, Ken Dudley, and has three children.
