Bill Carlisle

William "Bill" Carlisle (born December 19, 1908 in Wakefield , Kentucky , † March 17, 2003 ) was an American country musician and singer. He often performed with his older brother, Cliff Carlisle . His nickname was " Jumpin 'Bill ".

Life

Childhood and youth

Bill Carlisle grew up in Wakefield. His brother Cliff taught him to play the guitar. During the 1920s he performed on various vaudevilles and tent shows. From 1929 the Carlisle family had their own radio show, the Carlisle Family Saturday Night Barn Dance, on a local radio station in Louisville . Impressed by Brother Cliff's success in the music scene, Carlisle also began to dedicate himself to music professionally.

Beginnings

In 1934, Cliff helped his brother Bill to sign a record deal with ARC Records . There he played his first single, Rattlesnake Daddy . In the following years he released other records such as String Bean Mama , the Jumpin 'and Jenkin' Blues or Sally, Let Your Bangs Hang Down . During this time he often performed with his brother and released records with him. But he also performed regularly with his own band, including on the radio shows Midday Merry-Go-Round and WNOX Tennessee Barn Dance .

breakthrough

Together with his brother Cliff, he had his first big hit in 1946. Rainbow at Midnight achieved a good chart position. Two years later, in 1948, the two achieved another success with Tramp On The Street . He then began his successful solo career in the early 1950s. In 1953 he first appeared on the Grand Ole Opry , America's most successful radio show. He also continued to release records such as No Help Wanted , Knothole and Shake-A-Lage . His track Too Old To Cut The Mustard was later recorded by many successful musicians such as Ernest Tubb and Red Foley , The Maddox Brothers and Rose Maddox, and Marlene Dietrich and Rosemary Clooney . His last hit was in 1965 with What Kinda Deal Is This? .

In the years that followed he performed frequently with his son Billy and daughter Sheila. In 2002 he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame .

Bill Carlisle died on March 17, 2003.
