Johann Dietrich von Steinen
Johann Dietrich (Diederich) von Steinen (born March 7, 1699 in Frömern , today part of Fröndenberg / Ruhr ; † August 31, 1759 ibid) was a Westphalian historian and Protestant pastor to Frömern.
Life
Johann Dietrich came from a Protestant pastor's family in Frömern. He was the son of pastor Diedrich Reinhard von Steinen (1667–1727) and Sybilla Mentz . His great-great-grandfather Heinrich von Steinen (1504–1585) introduced the Reformation in Frömern in 1545 and stood at the beginning of a pastor dynasty : The von Steinen family provided the local pastor for seven generations.
Steinen married on March 14, 1724 in Lippstadt (Westphalia) Clara Anna Ernestine Mönnich (* 1697 in Lippstadt, † February 16, 1759 in Frömern), the daughter of pastor Arnold Mönnich. From this marriage came three sons and a daughter, including the elder Johann Dietrich Franz Ernst von Steinen , like his father a well-known historian and last pastor of this family zu Frömern.
He first attended the Latin school in Unna , then the Archigymnasium in Dortmund , before studying theology at the universities of Jena (1717–1720) and Halle (Saale) (1720/21) . He was first house chaplain in Aprath (today part of Wülfrath ) before he was appointed pastor in Kleve in 1722 and pastor in Isselburg in 1724 . On November 30, 1727, after the death of his father, he succeeded him in Frömern. In 1749 Steinen was elected General Inspector ( Superintendent ) of the Lutheran parishes in County Mark . In 1750 he was also consistorial councilor in Hamm .
He wrote the multi-volume Westphalian history and was also the editor of Johann Hobbeling's description of the whole Münster monastery and Johann von der Berswordts Westphalian Adeliches Stammbuch .
His grandson, the Gummersbach pastor Johann Friedrich Franz von Steinen (1758–1819), was also the author of several works on Westphalian history.
Johann Dietrich von Steinen had many copies of old documents. They were lost in the Seven Years' War in 1761 when the whole town was destroyed by fire.
