Johann Friedrich Franz von Steinen

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann Friedrich Franz von Steinen (born February 25, 1758 in Unna , † January 31, 1819 in Gummersbach ) was a German pastor, historian and author.

Life

Johann Friedrich Franz came from the Westphalian noble family stones , which for the development not only of the Mark Lutheranism , but also the historiography of the Brandenburg area was significant. His grandfather Johann Dietrich von Steinen (1699–1759) was the author of the "Westphalian History" , a source work that is still relevant to historical research today.

Von Steinen was born as the son of the district physicist (doctor) Johann Christoph von Steinen and Helene Johanna Regina Davidis in Unna and was originally baptized with the name Dietrich Franz Wilhelm. After studying theology, he took up a position as vicar in Gummersbach at the main church there on November 28, 1784 . Two years later von Steinen married Maria Magdalena Middelhoff, with whom he fathered four daughters and two sons between 1787 and 1801. JFF von Steinen acted as pastor primarius in Gummersbach from 1796 until his death .

Historical work

As his ancestors were interested in history, von Steinen devoted himself to collecting numerous historical documents in addition to his pastoral work and, among other things, evaluated the Schwarzenberg archive in Gimborn .

This work was reflected both in the book “Descriptions of the parishes of Gummersbach, Lieberhausen, Gimborn and Müllenbach including a description of the Marienheÿde monastery” , as well as in a “history of the country” and a “directory of the families of the whole parish that are cited several times in the parish descriptions Gummersbach " . These works serve today as indispensable sources for the traceability of the history of Gummersbach and the history of the imperial rule of Gimborn-Neustadt .

Further descriptions of the parishes of Ründeroth and Wiedenest , which were connected to the main church in Gummersbach in von Steinen's time through the right of collation , are mentioned several times in the texts mentioned, but are not available because they could either no longer be realized by the author or have been lost. The descriptions of some parishes of the former Gimborn-Neustadt rule were written in the first two decades of the 19th century.

None of his works were printed during von Steinen's lifetime. It was not until 1856 that Friedrich Luycken in Gummersbach published a slightly modernized version of the description of the parish of Gummersbach and was published for the second time in 1896. The other parish descriptions remained unpublished.

Only the “history of the country” was printed in extracts from 1836 in several editions of the Aggerblatt .
