The district and city library in Gummersbach is the largest public library in the Oberbergischer Kreis with around 72,000 media and offers books, DVDs , Blu-ray discs , console games , e-media (including e-books ) and access to databases such as the Munzinger archive . It is also of particular importance for the region due to its extensive inventory of regional historical newspapers (including the “Agger-Blatt” (1835–1842), the “Gummersbacher Zeitung” (1870–1936) and the “Oberbergische Volkszeitung” (from 1949)). It emerged from the merging of the formerly independent district library of the Oberbergischer Kreis and the Gummersbach city library.

The local history area in the district and city library of Gummersbach is the Oberberg Historical Library , with around 13,600 regional history titles, which as sub-areas also include the deposit of the library of the Bergisches Geschichtsverein (department of Oberberg) and the library of the West German Society for Family Studies (department of Oberberg -Mark). Some of the regional historical newspaper holdings have been filmed up to 1952 , so that photocopies can also be made. Newspapers from 1953 that have not been filmed can be photographed by hand. The print newspaper inventory up to 1952 is generally not accessible.
