Johann Dietrich (also: Diederich) Franz Ernst von Steinen (born December 17, 1724 in Isselburg , † May 26, 1797 in Frömern (today part of Fröndenberg / Ruhr ), Grafschaft Mark ) was a Westphalian historian and Protestant pastor .

Von Steinen was the son of Johann Dietrich von Steinen , who from 1727 was a pastor in Frömern (today part of Fröndenberg / Ruhr ) in the county of Mark , Westphalia . He studied at the University of Halle from 1743 and was pastor in Langendreer for twelve years from 1747 , before coming to Frömern in 1759 to support his sick father. After his father's death in 1759 he was his successor. Like his father, he became inspector general ( superintendent ) of the Lutheran congregations in Grafschaft Mark and consistorial councilor in Hamm in 1766 . In February 1979 he retired .

Von Steinen was a member of the German Society of Göttingen and the last of seven members of the family who were descended in a straight line and who were pastors of the parish in Frömern.

During the Seven Years' War , the collection of Westphalian chronicles and manuscripts collected by him and his ancestors was burned.
