Anna Vyrubova ( Russian Анна Александровна Вырубова ., Scientific transliteration Anna Aleksandrovna Vyrubova , born Танеева / Tanejewa * 16th July 1884 in Oranienbaum , † 20 July 1964 in Helsinki ) was maid of honor and closest confidant of Empress Alexandra Feodorovna .

Life

Anna Alexandrowa, daughter of the composer Taneyev , was a lady in waiting for Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna. As a child she was a playmate of Felix Jussupow , who later masterminded the Rasputin assassination . Yusupov said derogatory about her:

“Anna, Taneyev's eldest daughter, was tall and plump with a swollen, shiny face, devoid of any charm. Although she wasn't intelligent at all, she was exceptionally smart and quite cunning. It was quite difficult to find partners for her. Nobody could have guessed that this unattractive girl would one day become the tsarina's close friend and evil spirit. Rasputin's amazing influence at court is largely thanks to her. "

On April 30, 1907, she married Lieutenant Wyrubow. She later wrote that Rasputin had predicted an unhappy marriage for her. However, his letters to her from this period prove the opposite. He complimented her and called her future husband "a golden cross". The marriage lasted only a month. When, shortly after the wedding, the marital problems could no longer be ignored, Rasputin advised the unhappy wife in writing to be patient and promised her a happy ending. But it turned out differently. Anna Vyrubova, who later accused her husband of sexual impotence and a tendency towards sadism, was brutally beaten by him and the marriage ended in divorce after a year. Rasputin now offered consolation to the divorced woman and promised her in a letter dated July 1, 1908 that she, the “sufferer” whose husband she had “slandered”, would find peace when she “found her torments before the throne of the Almighty will pour out ". The painful divorce strengthened her religious passion and brought her even closer to the Tsarina and Rasputin.

Anna Vyrubova did not, as often claimed, introduce Rasputin to the court of the tsars. This was done by Grand Duchess Anastasia , married to Grand Duke Nikolai Nikolajewitsch . However, she was a constant companion of the tsarist family, especially the tsarina, and had a prominent position as a link to Rasputin. Anna Vyrubova wanted to serve the tsarina as well as Rasputin; She never wanted to exercise political influence, and it would never have been allowed to her.

During the First World War , she was a nurse at the Russian Red Cross together with the Tsarina and their eldest daughters Olga and Tatiana . On January 2, 1915, Anna Vyrubowa had a serious accident in a railway accident. Having already received the sacraments , she woke up after a prayer by Rasputin. For the tsarina as for Anna Vyrubova, this was further proof of Rasputin's choice.

After the February Revolution of 1917 , she was repeatedly arrested by the Provisional Government and the Cheka because of her proximity to the tsarist family . In December 1920 she managed to escape to Finland . In exile she published memoirs from her time with the Romanovs.

She died in Helsinki in 1964 and is buried in the local Orthodox cemetery.
