Bachus polka

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Bachus polka is a polka by Johann Strauss Sohn (op. 38). The work was performed for the first time on February 2, 1847 in the Strüßl Hall, in the building of the Theater in der Josefstadt in Vienna.

Remarks

The spelling of the title is a proper name. Correctly one would have to write Bachus with a double c . At that time, however, the name was used in the spelling shown here. Nevertheless, the Roman god of wine was meant. The work was performed in Mardi Gras in 1847 and describes the happy, exuberant atmosphere of a drinking festival. The composer would later take up this theme again and again in other works. The Bachus Polka stayed on the repertoire of his orchestra for a long time and was very popular, especially among young people.

The playing time on the CD listed under individual records is 2 minutes and 39 seconds. This time can vary somewhat depending on the conductor's musical conception.
