Carl Carl , pseudonym for Karl Andreas von Bernbrunn (born November 7, 1787 in Krakow , Poland; † August 14, 1854 in Bad Ischl ), was an Austrian actor and theater director and an important representative of the old Viennese folk theater .

Life

Carl was the son of the German businessman Karl Andrä Bernbrunn and the divorced wife of the Austrian writer Johann Baptist von Alxinger . Lt. ADB , the date of birth cannot be verified because the present birth certificate is a fake. They probably wanted to cover up the illegitimate birth, as this marriage could only be legalized after Alxinger's death in 1796.

Carl's mother was the daughter of the purveyor to the court Abraham Wetzlar, who converted to Catholicism with his family in 1776 . In 1777 Abraham Wetzlar was raised to the hereditary baron status and given the title of Plankenstern . Neither Carl Carl nor his father Karl Andrä were entitled to this title of nobility, although they used the title of baron throughout their lives .

After finishing school, Carl became a cadet and student at the KK Technical Engineering Academy in Vienna . He completed this training with the rank of ensign and participated as such in April 1809 at the Battle of Abensberg . There he was taken prisoner by the French, but was released against his word of honor, "never to fight against France again".

Carl said goodbye to the army and settled in Vienna. The attempt as an actor at the Josephstädter Theater ended miserably, since according to the code of the kk officer corps a member of the same was not allowed to practice such a profession.

Carl went to Munich , where he found a job under the singer and director Karl Friedrich Weinmüller at the Herzoggarten Theater. There he was discovered by the principal, Baron de la Motte, who immediately engaged him at his Isartortheater . After a short time, Carl became the manager of this theater, in which he mostly played the youthful hero . In Munich, Carl also met the actress Margarethe Lang , a daughter of the Bavarian court musician Martin Lang and the court actress Marianne Boudet .

In addition to his work at the theater, Carl found the time to found a drama school ("Actor Education Institute"). There he led courses and promoted young talents there. The later composer Ignaz Lachner got a job in Carl's ensemble in this way. The intrigues at the Bavarian court soon forced Carl to make compromises. Since he was not ready to do the same, he left Munich with his entire ensemble in the fall of 1826 and settled in Vienna.

The following spring, Carl rented the Theater an der Wien , which he directed until 1845. During this time he bought the Leopoldstadt Theater in 1838 . After renovation and remodeling, it was opened as the Carltheater in 1847 and played until 1945.

While in Munich the main focus of Carl's repertoire was on spectacle pieces , this changed in Vienna to popular comedy. Carl was able to build on a tradition of playwrights such as Adolf Bäuerle , Josef Alois Gleich and Karl Meisl . These pieces were presented in a congenial way. a. by Alois Grois , Friedrich Hopp , Johann Nestroy and Wenzel Scholz . As an actor, Carl himself embodied the Staberl, who has meanwhile become a popular figure, like no other .

At the age of 67, Carl Carl died on August 14, 1854 in Bad Ischl and was buried in the city cemetery there.
