Otto Rommel
Otto Rommel (born June 12, 1880 in Mährisch Schönberg ; † September 6, 1965 in Salzerbad , municipality of Kleinzell / Lower Austria ) was an Austrian literary and theater historian.
Life
Rommel was a high school teacher in Teschen and Vienna . Together with Adolf Loos , Arnold Schönberg and Hans Kelsen , he taught at Eugenie Schwarzwald's girls' high school and was its director from 1916 to 1919. 1919–1937 he was in charge of the Federal Education Institute Vienna-Breitensee . Rommel edited historical-critical complete editions, a. a. by Ludwig Anzengruber and Johann Nestroy , and published sixty volumes in the Austrian Classics Library from 1908–1914. He researched the popular Viennese theater.
Rommel's overview presentation, Die Alt-Wiener Volkskomödie , published in 1952, is still one of the standard works on this subject today. In it Rommel valued the satirical Johann Nestroy compared to the theater poets Franz Grillparzer and Ferdinand Raimund , both of whom had earlier found their way into the Vienna Burgtheater as Nestroy .
To remonstrate about Rommel's affinity for Nazism , the (albeit biased even relevant) Theaterwissenschaftlerin expressed Margret Dietrich on 10 October 1952 in a letter to Heinrich Schnitzler , the son of the writer Arthur Schnitzler : "Rommel is politically absolutely integer, represented one and the same point of view from 1906 to 1952, clean and clear in all his actions and words. In the past few years he received the recognition award of the City of Vienna. " ( Documentation archive of the Austrian resistance 15948/17)
