In 1878 Riedel settled in Braunschweig , where he became Kapellmeister at the Ducal Court Theater . From 1882 to 1911 he was court conductor of the Braunschweiger Hofkapelle and director of the court theater ensemble.

Riedel is mainly known as the composer of Scheffel's trumpet songs, a song cycle that he wrote on texts from the popular "epic poem" Der Trompeter von Säckingen by Joseph Victor von Scheffel . He also composed the comic opera Der Ritterschlag , as well as a number of chamber music works. To this day, his choir pieces of Christmas carols such as O you merry or Silent Night, Holy Night are relocated and performed.
