Harvest dances

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Harvest Dances is a waltz by Johann Strauss Sohn (op. 45). The work was performed for the first time on July 26, 1847 on the occasion of the Kirchweih festival in Brigittenau in the northern part of the Danube Island (Vienna).

Remarks

The work was composed by Strauss especially for the festival in Brigittenau. Since the author of the title page accidentally announced the waltz as the Erndte dances , he was now also known by this obscure name. Because one could assume a rich and high quality grain harvest in the summer of 1847 and thus supply bottlenecks could be overcome, the title harvest dances was chosen as a sign of joy at these positive prospects. The waltz itself was in the style of Joseph Lanner , who was still popular in Vienna but who had died in the meantime . However, like many early works by Johann Strauss (son), the work was soon forgotten. It was specially restored for the CD recording of all of Strauss' orchestral works mentioned below.

The playing time on the CD listed under individual records is 7 minutes and 12 seconds. Depending on the musical conception of the conductor, this time can change by up to a minute plus or minus.
